World Premiere of Big City, Big Dreams on 28 July at Joburg Theatre

Joburg Ballet will collaborate with two other leading South African dance companies – Moving Into Dance Mophatong and Vuyani Dance Theatre – on a major new production opening on Friday 28 July 2017 when Big City, Big Dreams has its world premiere at Joburg Theatre.

Revised La Traviata Casting & Two New Productions Announced for 2017

Guest artists Juan Pablo Ledo from Buenos Aires and Daniel Szybkowski from Cape Town City Ballet join Joburg Ballet’s dancers in the casting line-up for the company’s 10-performances of La Traviata – The Ballet at Joburg Theatre from 31 March to 9 April. Due to the departure of Dayana Acuna and Juan Carlos Osma to Cuba, Joburg Ballet has revised the season casting. The changes do not affect the dates for Burnise Silvius’ final three performances as prima ballerina with Argentinean guest artist Juan Pablo Ledo on 1, 8 and 9 April, all at 15:00.

Joburg Ballet seeks a Financial Accountant

Joburg Ballet seeks to appoint a Financial Accountant who will be responsible for the summary, analysis and reporting of financial transactions pertaining to the company. This full time position includes among other duties the preparation of statements and budgets, cash flow management, debtors and creditors, overseeing of audit process, payroll management etc.

Joburg Ballet’s prima ballerina announces final performances in April

Joburg Ballet’s prima ballerina Burnise Silvius has announced that she will be retiring from the stage at the end of the upcoming season of La Traviata – The Ballet at Joburg Theatre. Her final performance takes place on Sunday 9 April, preceded by performances on Saturday 1 April and Saturday 8 April, all at 3.00pm. She will dance the tragic heroine Camille, partnered by guest artist Juan Ledo from the Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires, in the role of Armand. Joburg Ballet artistic director Iain MacDonald makes a rare return to the stage during the season in the character role of Germont.

Joburg Ballet’s first production of 2017 will be the long-awaited return of celebrated choreographer Veronica Paeper’s La Traviata – The Ballet to Joburg Theatre for ten performances from Friday 31 March to Sunday 9 April. The ballet was last performed in Johannesburg to public and critical acclaim in 2008.

Paeper is South Africa’s leading choreographer working in the classical style and has created an extensive repertoire of ballets. She is particularly admired for her full-length story ballets, among which La Traviata – The Ballet is one of her most popular works.

Joburg Ballet’s Studio Soirées Close the Year

Joburg Ballet closes its highly successful 2016 performance calendar with a season of weekend Soirées in the company’s beautiful studios at Joburg Theatre from 19 November to 4 December.

Following acclaimed performances of Giselle, Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella, the Studio Soirées – which were launched last year – showcase Joburg Ballet’s dancers in well-known and less familiar highlights from the classics, as well as newly commissioned work.

This year, the Soirées also include appearances by South Africa’s internationally applauded guitar duo, CH2, at four of the six performances, playing for new works being choreographed by Joburg Ballet’s artistic director Iain MacDonald.

The Studio Soirées programme includes Joburg Ballet’s first performances of the classical Esmeralda Pas de Deux and the Russian version of the sparkling pas de deux from La Fille mal gardée.
